Inspiration finds me in many ways, and often sporadically. Love, life, passion, laughter — suffering and pain. People inspire me. Injustice inspires me. Joy inspires me. Nature inspires me. AUSTIN — Filmmaker ChristineRose sees fascism in America, and she wants to talk about it — as defined by fascism’s poster boy, Benito Mussolini, the late dictator of Italy: “Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism, because it is the merger of State and Corporate Power,” he said.

But Rose has found the hard way with her documentary Liberty Bound that it’s not so easy. Last summer she had difficulties finding a distributor for the film inside the United States. Liberty Bound examines the U.S. after 9/11, the war in Iraq, and America’s fascist tendencies, most notably in the current White House. Continue reading this post…

Following the showing of Liberty Bound in Portsmouth on August 17, 2004, filmmaker and activist Christine Rose led an engaging discussion as she took questions from the audience. What follows is a summarized transcription from a videotape of the session.

There were numerous questions about her making of the film, and others such as: How can we be assured of an election in November? How can we get more young people involved?

“Liberty Bound” an 88 minute documentary on DVD is currently touring the country and being compared to Fahrenheit 911. We all wonder “Is the United States bound for liberty - or does it just have liberty bound?

United States, August 27, 2004 (Xtvworld - link) — With all the recent press about Michael Moore’s documentary “Fahrenheit 911″, very few people have yet to hear about a powerful independent film called Liberty Bound. Very few, that is, except for the large crowd that attended the premiere of the film in Paris on June 23rd.

Christine Rose, the documentary filmmaker, was present to answer questions about the film for over an hour after the screening to an inspired audience of young and old. Unlike Moore’s film, who has several other documentaries under his belt, this is Ms. Rose’s first film; and yet she couldn’t have picked a more powerful subject, or for that matter, a more controversial one. It may be impossible to accurately determine what effect Fahrenheit 9/11 will have on the 2004 presidential race, but one thing is certain: Michael Moore has revitalized the documentary form. Not only has Fahrenheit 9/11 ignited an intense political debate, it has also given rise to the discussion of the movie form itself.

Because Moore has an obvious agenda, many critics ask whether the film qualifies as a documentary. But that’s nothing new: Documentaries usually express a point of view, and often an extreme one, such as Leni Riefenstahl’s Nazi lovefests of the 1930s and Frank Capra’s Why We Fight series during World War II. In mid-July, Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 opened in France and made $3.4 million, showing on only 222 screens across the country. That weekend, in a single theater in Paris, a movie showed up that looked suspiciously like Moore’s, only it had been made a year earlier by a woman from Texas who was her own film crew. It didn’t make much money, but it left quite an impression, first-time filmmaker Christine Rose recalls from her home in Nova Scotia. “We had a Q&A on opening night, and that went on for over an hour before they pulled me out of the theater,” she says. “But after dinner we walked by the theater, and people were still outside talking about the movie. In particular it probes the meaning and identifying traits of fascism and questions the lawfulness of the Patriot Act. Boldly examining the validity of what many would consider radical, if not downright absurd, comparisons between George W. Bush’s administration and Adolf Hitler’s regime, Rose calls on respected thinkers-including historian Howard Zinn-to lend their perspective and insight. But when we found out that one of our own directed a hard-hitting feature documentary about civil liberties and freedom in George Bush and John Ashcroft’s America, we were extremely proud. Christine Rose’s self-funded film, Liberty Bound, premiered at the Artivest Film Festival in Hollywood, California in April. Its theatrical premiere was at Espace St. Michel in Paris, where French audiences ate up every second. Just one stop on the nationwide tour, Liberty Bound played to an appreciative and enthusiastic full house in Portsmouth, NH.

On the evening of August 17, 2004, the sounds of horns, drums and flute were heard bellowing through the streets of Portsmouth, NH. Following the festive sound to South Church on State Street, the Leftist Marching Band was welcoming the showing of Christine Rose’s documentary film, Liberty Bound. Over 200 people came out to view the film, which was organized and sponsored by a number of local activist groups: Seacoast Peace Response, Seacoast Alliance for Democracy, NH Independent Media Center, NH Progressive Democrats, and the Seacoast 9/11 Questions Committee.
